Dear HPMI Tenants,

This page is a reminder of some of the preparations that you need to do ahead of time to prepare you and your family for the impending storm. Doing these simple tasks will help you and your family get through this storm and its aftermath as best as can be expected. The goal is to make you and your family as comfortable as possible until the utilities can be returned to normal. Everyone needs to do their part in order to ensure their family’s safety.

  • Please log onto www.NCEM.org to see if you are in a floodplain. If you are, follow the assigned evacuation routes and EMAIL us to let us know that you are leaving.
  • Fill your car’s gas tank and any reserve gas cans that you have on hand.
  • Take some cash out of the bank. ATM’s and debit card machines do not work without power.
  • Get canned foods and a MANUAL can opener.
  • Secure propane tanks and/or charcoal for your grills. This may be your primary source of cooking for a few days. DO NOT GRILL INDOORS OR IN YOUR GARAGE!
  • Water preparations.
    • Emergency management recommends 1 gallon of water per person per day for 3 days.
    • Freeze these gallon jugs of water. The blocks of ice can be used to keep your food cold in your fridge and coolers while also keeping your water cold
    • Fill all your bathtubs just before the storm hits. You can use this water to bathe or fill your reserve tanks on your toilets to flush them.
    • Take a shower just before the storm hits. You do not know the next time you will be able to do so.
  • Buy batteries for flash lights, lanterns and radios. DO NOT USE CANDLES OR OTHER OPEN FLAMES!!!!!!!
  • Make certain that you have games to keep you and your kids occupied. Your children will be scared, keep them busy.
  • Get medical supplies such as first aid kits, prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs ahead of time.
  • Buy toiletries such as toilet paper, baby wipes and other necessities.
  • Secure any important papers such as ID’s. social security cards etc. in waterproof baggies.
  • Fully charge all cell phones so that they are ready to go. Secure car chargers as well so you can keep them charged.
  • If you have pets, do not forget about their needs. Secure food, water and medicine as necessary.
  • Secure your property.
    • If you have a garage, please put all trash cans, lawn furniture, grills and other outdoor items inside. If you do not have a garage, lash them together so they are secure.
    • Lock and Bungee cord your fence gates and screen doors so that they don’t flop around in the wind.
    • Pick up and haul away any debris that can become a projectile.
    • Close blinds and curtains to minimize any flying glass if a window does break.
    • Know where your most secure interior room is and make an emergency plan with your family. Have a rally point if you get separated.

Please do as much as you can both before and after the storm. YOU are your own first line of defense and protection. We will expect YOU to do your part in securing your home before the storm and restoring some normalcy afterwards until help can arrive. If you need to contact us, please give us your address AND your phone number. Please do not assume that we will have immediate access to your information. We will do our best to help those in need as fast as we can. Once our own families are safe and secure, we will begin to help others. Resources and man power are going to be limited for some time. Do what you can for yourself, your family and your neighbors.

Good Luck Everyone!
